9 Simple Habits

In this post: You’ll find 9 practical habits to keep your home tidy every day and a guide for reference.

Let’s be real—keeping a tidy home isn’t about spending hours scrubbing floors or organizing every drawer to perfection. It’s about small, consistent habits that make cleaning feel effortless.

The good news? You don’t need a complicated system or an army of storage bins. These 9 simple habits will help you maintain a clutter-free, inviting space—without spending your entire life cleaning.

If you love a streamlined routine, I’ve listed 9 simple habits to help you keep your home tidy, plus a downloadable checklist to keep you on track.

When you commit to these small daily habits, they become second nature—things you do without even thinking about it.

9 Simple Habits to Support a Calm and Inviting Tone.

1. Make the Beds Every Morning

Making your bed sets the tone for the day. There’s something about turning a messy pile of blankets into a neat, put-together space that signals organization and order in your mind.

It’s a small win with a big impact—one that makes the whole room feel instantly tidier.

2. Load and Unload Your Dishwasher

Load the dishwasher every night and unload it every morning. Waking up to a clean kitchen and an empty sink is one of the simplest ways to start your day stress-free.

When the dishwasher is ready to load throughout the day, the kitchen stays clutter-free—no pileups in the sink. By bedtime, it’s full and ready to run, and the cycle begins again.

Side note: There are definitely days when the dishwasher isn’t empty yet… and I still hit start anyway. Real life, right?

3. Declutter Surface Areas

Countertops, islands, and tables can quickly become clutter magnets. The key is resetting them throughout the day.

  • Return items to their designated “home” so your surfaces stay clear and functional.
  • Put away food and containers after meals.
  • Sort and file (or toss) any mail that lands on the counter.

4. Wipe Surface Areas

Once surfaces are cleared, wipe them down. Crumbs, spills, and sticky spots attract dust and bugs—not to mention, a clean surface just feels better.

Bonus: As you wipe, you might find stray items that need to be put away. Use this as a quick reset moment.

5. Dirty Clothes in the Hamper

The simplest habit to keep clothes off the floor? A designated hamper for every person in the house.

This keeps laundry sorted, socks together, and floors clear. No more “Is this clean or dirty?” piles lingering around.

6. Start and Finish One Load of Laundry

One load a day keeps the laundry mountain away. Instead of tackling all the laundry at once, spreading it out makes it manageable.

Doing smaller loads also prevents the washing machine from getting overloaded—because nothing ruins productivity like a washer that’s off-balance mid-cycle.

And don’t let wet clothes sit too long! In humid places like here in Pensacola, FL, they’ll start to mildew quickly, which means an annoying rewash.

7. Put Clean Clothes In Their Home

Just like moving clothes from the washer to the dryer in time, putting them away quickly saves you from the dreaded wrinkle pile-up.

If you don’t have time to fold, lay clothes flat while they’re still warm. This prevents wrinkles and keeps everything looking fresh.

8. Declutter the Floors

A quick walk-through pickup keeps floors clear throughout the day. If something’s out of place, return it to its home.

Not sure where something belongs? Ask yourself:
Where’s the first place I would look for this?
That’s where it should live.

For example, I always do my daughters’ hair after breakfast. Logically, hair supplies belong in the bathroom, but realistically, we’re in the kitchen when I use them. So, I keep a small drawer in the kitchen for brushes, bows, and ties.

9. Sweep or Vacuum High Traffic Areas

If you’ve cleared countertops and picked up the floor, the final step is sweeping or vacuuming high-traffic areas.

With two dogs, we constantly have little “tumbleweeds” of fur rolling around when the air kicks on. And carpet? It’s a magnet for pet hair.

It’s always shocking how much dust and fur collects—even when things look clean! (And yes, always empty the vacuum canister after every use. It fills up faster than you think!)
