Why I Created The Calm Home Method

Minimalism, Organizing

In this post: Discover how I transformed endless chore lists into The Calm Home Method, a cozy minimalist approach that promotes a calm atmosphere.

Creating The Calm Home Method stemmed after scrolling through Instagram and Facebook pages. I noticed endless chore charts and rigid cleaning routines. Every post featured a never-ending list of tasks—laundry on Tuesday, clean windows on Thursday, and countless products to scrub every surface.

There were videos of people giving exact directions on how to clean and disinfect a toilet. This is fantastic if someone didn’t know how to do that. However, this got me thinking about my own cleaning tendencies.

While I love tidying up and organizing, I found that focusing solely on chores, and which days to do them, made home maintenance feel mechanical rather than meaningful.

I knew I approached my cozy minimalist lifestyle differently. There was a need to share something that didn’t have anything to do with a “clean house,” but a cozy atmosphere.

The Instagram Chore Culture vs. a Real-Life Approach

Many pages emphasize cleaning routines as a badge of honor. As for me, a home should be more than a series of checklists. I believe that cozy minimalism is about creating a warm, inviting space—not just a perfectly clean one.

  • Real life happens: My windows proudly display my dogs’ nose prints, and that’s a sign of a home filled with life. I personally don’t want to clean the same windows every single day.
  • Less rigidity, more rhythm: Instead of assigning specific tasks to each day, I needed a natural rhythm that supports both today and tomorrow.

My Personal Journey to Cozy Minimalism

I didn’t want my home to be a never-ending list of chores. I wanted a space where I could breathe—a place that truly supports my well-being as well as my husband’s and daughter’s. This desire led me to create The Calm Home Method. It’s not about perfection; it’s about cultivating a flow that makes your home peaceful.

The Calm Home Method: 10 Simple Habits

Here are the 10 habits that transformed my home and could change yours too:

  1. Make the Bed
Starting the day with a made bed sets a tone of calm and accomplishment.
  2. Reset the Kitchen at Night
A tidy kitchen in the morning means a stress-free start to your day.
  3. One Load of Laundry a Day
Keeping up with laundry daily prevents overwhelming piles.
  4. 5-Minute Evening Reset
A short, consistent cleanup helps you wind down each day.
  5. Create a Drop Zone
Designate a spot for everyday items like backpacks and keys—so they’re not scattered around.
  6. One In, One Out Rule
Keep your space intentionally curated by letting go of items when new ones come in.
  7. Keep Surfaces Clear
Uncluttered surfaces provide mental clarity and an inviting look.
  8. Daily Trash and Recycle Sweep
Regularly taking out the trash keeps your home feeling fresh.
  9. Keep a Donation Bin Handy
A ready donation bin encourages you to let go of items that no longer serve you.
  10. Sunday Home Reset
A weekly routine to regroup and refresh your space for the coming week.

Embracing a Way of Life, Not Just a Clean House

The Calm Home Method isn’t about scrubbing every surface spotless. It’s about establishing a rhythm that supports your life. My goal is to create a home that flows with daily life—a space that is comfortable, peaceful, and truly lived in.

A calm home allows you to relax, recharge, and enjoy the moments that matter most.
