In this post: Use the Breadcrumb Test to choose low-maintenance home designs that hide messes.
Years ago someone was telling me about the new home they were building. They were excited to pick out different flooring, fixtures, counters – the works. She only had one rule: It must pass the “Breadcrumb Test.” Well, I was definitely intrigued!
Simply put, the “Breadcrumb Test” is a simple way to determine if your design choices are going to be practical for everyday life using the crumbs of a piece of bread.
Toast a piece of bread or, pull one straight out of the bag, and crumble it into tiny bits between your fingers while sprinkling your floors, countertops, table tops – all surfaces, to see if the crumbs are visible. Your kids would probably LOVE to help with this experiment.
The goal of this this Breadcrumb Test is a quick way to choose low-maintenance home designs that hide messes.
One of two things are going to happen when you sprinkle those crumbs: One, the crumbs will disappear, which is the best possible outcome. This material is maintenance. Two, the crumbs will be like a craft explosion with glitter, impossible to clean. This would be high-maintenance.
My husband is from Missouri, and while visiting family, we stopped at my favorite place, a charming art gallery in Augusta, Missouri.
Bryce and I immediately fell in love with this gorgeous, handmade Amish table with matching, hand-carved chairs. The table top was a dark walnut, the chairs were whitewashed, and the middle leaf neatly tucked away beneath the surface to adjust the size as needed.
We rented a trailer and made the long drive from Missouri to Florida with the table and chairs in tow.
Little did I know that my gorgeous table would fail the Breadcrumb Test miserably.
No one wants to constantly clean up crumbs, dust, and smudges just to maintain a beautiful home. This applies to flooring, countertops, tables, surfaces in high-traffic areas – and yes, even hand-made dining room tables. And that’s exactly what I’ve been doing with my own heirloom piece.
Why I didn’t ask myself these questions before we drove 14 hours home is easy; I simply didn’t know about this easy test.
The goal is to find a surface that hides these small specks is easy to clean.
As for me and my table, it was a simple, yet gut-wrenching decision. I simply had to take the plunge, and break it in. This meant embracing (and expecting) the scratches, slime, markers, and cup rings that have passed, come to pass, and will come to pass.
The Breadcrumb Test is a simple but powerful way to make sure your home’s design works with your lifestyle, not against it. Choosing materials that hide everyday messes and are easy to clean means less time scrubbing and more time enjoying your space.
Whether it’s flooring, countertops, or furniture, selecting low-maintenance, forgiving finishes helps create a home that feels effortlessly beautiful and welcoming.
